CREATURES OF NOSTALGIA

CREATURES OF NOSTALGIA

This collection is my pre-capstone exploration of my personal and constant struggle that is being a creature of nostalgia, stuck in the past but trying to live in the present. Split between two semesters, one focusing on patterning from draping on a form; the other focusing on learning and executing a design that was knit on a knitting machine. Creatures of Nostalgia is about me, a divided person who is trying desperately to figure out their place in life while trying to stay true to who I am. Constantly working towards being comfortable living life as it is now and not living in the past, but still keeping the memories that define who I am with me; refusing to be whisked away into the past that I’ve romanticized so much that I don’t know what’s a true memory anymore. I wanted to capture this dysphoric sense of being in this collection. To do so, my color palette is bleak with some more saturated colors to represent my desire for a consistent being. Sleeves extend beyond the reach of the fingers both for comfort and hesitation towards the future. Split seams are a key point to symbolize the split between a person living between two worlds – both the present and past. There are layers that can be used to reveal or conceal the body, a feeling that can be vulnerable but also comforting.  Lastly, this is a unisex collection to be worn by male, female, or any non gender comforming person. The ambiguity of the collection serves to truly exemplify my anxiety and uncertainty with life itself.
